James Natchwey ( Jakarta, 1998 )
It was sunday, the week after the riots between students and soldiers and I got a call from James at 10 o’clock saying ” There’s a problem, there’s something going on here, I don’t know what it is, there’s a church on fire, there’s people in the streets with swords, machetes, something is gonna go down!”. Half an hour later they caught 3 ambonese men, they killed them on the spot, cut them to pieces and they found the 4th one through the streets. James was basically with them for the entire chase through the streets. He’s got a black and white picture with this crazy mob behind him, blood streaming from his head. They were playing with him as little kids with the puppy. And James basically got on his knees 3 times praying, saying to them: “There’s no reason for you to kill this man, just because he’s ambonese”, but they didn’t listen, they killed him anyway. For 20 minutes he was on his knees saying “Please don’t kill this man, there’s no need!”.
